The Africa Hash Directory started life as an attempt by North Durban Hash to provide contact details for the four Durban Hash Houses. It seemed a natural progression from there to include the other South African Hashes to complete the "South Africanism" of the directory.
But when we got the first request from a hash in the neighbouring states to include their details we had to consider expanding the directory. Hey, hashing has never been nationalistic; so in came the southern states. But whoooah, where do you stop? In came the Indian Ocean lot; some of the oddest places from the Great Lakes States, and quite a few that required checking against an atlas to ensure they even existed. But they did!
While the catchphrase "South of the Sahara" has been used (Well, it sounds cool...) we actually concentrate on proactively hunting down details on hashing in Central and Southern Africa. And, for the purposes of defining those areas, we consider the belt formed by Angola, CAF, Zaire, Uganda and Kenya to be the northern boundary. But that does not exclude any African continent (or Indian Ocean Island) hashes who want to be listed here; simply fill the forms and you'll be on.
The primary idea behind the directory is that it is used by travelling and relocated hashers to hook into local hashing. So, to that end, the local contact telephone numbers are of primary importance. We use the "contact e-mail" addresses for administrative purposes in maintaining the accuracy of entries but it is likely that will also be used by visitors for making the initial contact. But e-mail addresses (like the ex-pats and the mis-management committees) come and go and therefore we ask for two or three e-mail contacts and will copy mail to them all in the hope of always getting through to someone "current".
