PREAMBLE SOWETO

SOWETO SHEBEEN RUN – 31 March 2005

As already threatened and announced (in a non-committal sort of way of course) for a long time, Jacaranda Hash House Harriers will be hosting a Soweto Shebeen Run on 31 March 2005. This will be an unofficial pre-lube to the Great Train Adventure, and an even more unofficial pre-lube to the Inter Africa Hash.

Details are still a bit sketchy (the mismanagement is doing an excellent job of mismanaging this thing!), but here's what we know so far:

When:

Thursday, 31 March 2005 from around midday

Where:

Buses will leave from a central point somewhere in the Johannesburg area (exact venue to be announced) and drive to Soweto. After the hash, the buses will deposit hashers at Park Station from where the train will leave.

What to expect:

We will travel through Soweto, past Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital - the largest hospital in South Africa, and indeed the southern hemisphere, past Regina Mundi church to Kliptown. Here the short run will take in the famous Vilakazi Street - the only street where you will find the houses of two Nobel Peace Prize Laureates (Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu), and Hector Petersen Memorial Square - the site of the 1976 riots. You will have time to visit a museum, and soak up the amazing vibe of the city. After the circle we will head for lunch before getting back to Jozi in time to meet the Africa X-Press.

Cost:

ZAR 300. This will include the bus trip to Soweto, the run, beer stop, lunch in Soweto, goodies and beer in transit.

Registration:

Will open soon! As places on the buses are limited, it will be on a first come, first served basis, with a cut-off for registrations on 15 March.
Please click here to download the registration form

Other Info:

Please bring South African currency to the run if you want to drink beer beforehand, buy curios in Soweto, etc. as there are no money changing facilities on the run.

Check out our website for further updates and details. Places on the bus are limited so register now.
